This adaptive reuse ‘core and shell’ project restores an existing assembly of 1950 and 60’s era commercial buildings into a new single-office storefront space. While within a Landmark District the exteriors of the buildings are protected, the project included custom storefront and door units, a new courtyard and exterior egress stair, and opened the interiors for contemporary modes of use. The approach involved a rigorously executed insertion of new systems, keeping them as concealed as possible to maintain a matter-of-fact presence of the existing structural elements, while replacing select walls with interior glazing, introducing natural light deep into the plan and creating new visual connections between spaces.
