BMW Technical Training Center

Spartanburg, South Carolina

A new 127,000 GSF building at the existing BMW Plant 10 manufacturing campus in Spartanburg, SC.

BLDGS was hired to create a comprehensive site analysis, conceptual design, construction strategy, and cost model for the new facility, serving to train new BMW associates for employment in the factory as well as act as the new “front door” to the campus. Plant 10 has the highest production volume of BMW factories worldwide, and is noted for the production of the X-Series of vehicles for distribution around the globe.

The new arrival to the Plant 10 campus is marked by entry into a large landscape courtyard space – the XHOF – scaled to support public receptions, community events, and gatherings for the full 11,000 employees of the facility. The training center building is designed to minimize its carbon footprint – structured with an engineered wood frame and cross laminated timber panels; naturally daylit; and clad in lightweight recycled perforated aluminum panels.  Primary conditioning systems are radiant heating and cooling, and natural ventilation.  The building siting and bay spacing is highly flexible, conforming to global BMW standards for space planning and future expansion.
