Georgia Tech Campus Center

2020 South Atlantic Region AIA Honor Award
The project is for the new Campus Center at Georgia Institute of Technology included 110,000 sf of adaptive reuse and 190,000 sf of new construction, together with significant performance-based landscape development in the heart of the re-developing campus. BLDGS was one of three teams selected for the three-month long Ideas Competition and we developed two distinct and complete approaches to test a range of ideas for the new campus center.
Both approaches seek to create diverse environments — discoverable paths and destinations, mystery and delight — through a specific strategy of program dispersal. We intentionally overlap indoor and outdoor spaces, circulation and program uses, to create complex environments throughout the new campus center.
Immersion leads to discovery, the unexpected leads to engagement.
In addition, both approaches were developed around multiple micro-climatic zones — expanding thermal comfort through shading, misting, air-movement, and soft-conditioning, to extend the times-of-year that the building can operate with low energy use. The façade systems are developed integrally, tune-able to the local climate, acting as thermal machines to reduce energy use and extend usability.
