Atlanta Contemporary Art Center

Atlanta

2015 Georgia AIA Honor Design Award

The project comprises the complete interior reconfiguration for gallery and educational spaces at the heart of the campus of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center.  The existing facility consisted of a varied collection of steel and masonry buildings built by Standard Oil between 1920 and 1950.  These structures followed divergent geometries based on the surround street layout, creating unexpected – but powerful – interior spatial intersections and overlaps.

The Contemporary has three primary missions: Exhibition – for the presentation of art of national significance; Education – fostering a community between that art and local artists, and Making – providing subsidized studios for up to 18 full-time artists.  The project vibrantly embodies these missions by uncovering and highlighting the contrasting building geometries and materials; creating new exterior view sheds to re-establish visual connections the surrounding neighborhood and city skyline; and establishing new intra-campus spatial connections to increase potential for awareness, interaction, and collaboration.
